I think everyone now and then gets the blues. I actually call it being
in a “funk”. I don’t let it upset me because I know it is just usually a temporary feeling. It feels like someone just upset the applecart and we need to deal with it, but regardless, we find ourselves in the “blues”
Here are the signs that you are in a funk:Feeling down, but still able to function at your job and daily living activities
Stable weight
Passing feelings of helplessness, but short lived
Still enjoying some recreational activities, such are music, cards, etc
Here are the signs that you are in a depression:Feel sad or irritable.
Have lost interest in activities I used to enjoy.
I’m eating much less than I usually do and have lost weight, or I’m eating much more than I usually do and have gained weight.
I am sleeping much less or more than I usually do.
I have no energy or feel tired much of the time.
I feel anxious and can’t seem to sit still.
I feel guilty or worthless.
I have trouble concentrating or find it hard to make decisions.
I have recurring thoughts about death or suicide, I have a suicide plan, or I have tried to commit suicide.

The good news is that being in a funk usually lasts anywhere from a day to just about a week, but it does pass.
Here are some things to try to do to get yourself out of the “blues”.
Share your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. They can offer their support and give their perspective of the current situation and guidance.
Spend time with others. Do not isolate yourself- that can keep you in the blues and lead you into a depression.
Take a walk or participate in a moderate exercise activity and it can help to lift your mood and spirit.
Get adequate rest and properly balanced meals. Too much sugar or goodies will actually numb your feelings and keep you in the blues.
Don’t overwhelm yourself by thinking about all the things you need to get done. Just set small goals and keep taking steps toward your goal. You will have a feeling of accomplishment by doing this one step at a time.
Try to be helpful to other people. It helps to get your mind off yourself.
Listen to some enjoyable happy music. Music is energy and can lift the “blues”
Before you know it the blues will have passed and you will feel more peaceful and ready to go on with life.
